Prospecting

Greetings From Chimo

Chimo Financial Services Inc. has been part of the scene for about thirty-five years, not nearly as long as it's owners, Lyle and Betty Manery. I started my insurance career in May 1956. Betty joined Chimo in 1976, to help us get caught up. She is still trying to do that.

She is my partner in business as well as in life.

The Chimo name came about because my associates and I could not agree on whose name should be first, so we hit upon the friendly Eskimo greeting "Chimo," which means literally, "Hello, I am friendly!" The answer had better be "Chimo" in return. The original symbol of an Eskimo, held a spear in one hand. We had this icon for many years, on our letterhead, on business cards, and on all promotional material, until one of my artistic friends produced this original rendition, just for us.

The Art of Finding People

In the months ahead we will address various topics that salespeople need to master, such as prospecting, approaching, making a presentation, answering objections, and closing the sale. All of these are skills that every salesperson needs to develop. Also each newsletter will contain financial information of general interest.

Prospecting is the key topic of this edition. Without someone to call on, the salesperson has nothing to do. The theme of "Build it and they will come" is a great line in a movie, but it is not so practical in real life. Nothing happens until someone sells something, and to sell anything you must have something to sell and someone to whom you can sell it.

The Prospector~Finding Prospects

A prospect is defined as someone who is a likely customer or candidate for your product. A prospector is commonly thought of as someone who looks for valuable ores, such a gold, or minerals, or gas and oil. Well, prospective customers for your product may be worth their weight in gold, or black gold, known as oil.

Prospecting for customers is not difficult if you make it a habit, and turn it into a process. It has been said, "Prospecting is like shaving. If you don't do it every day you will become a bum." I'm not sure how we can apply that masculine statement to the ladies. Suffice it to say that for both male and female salespeople, prospecting must become a process.

What's Wrong?

One day, a bartender noticed a man at the end of the bar who looked very glum. The bartender asked, "What's wrong? The guy replied, "I've got an I.Q. of 187, and I can't find anyone to talk with. It's very depressing." Another patron overheard him and stated, "Hey there, I've got an I.Q. of 190. I would love to have a conversation with someone like you." So they began talking about various theories of time, space, velocity, mass, and all that stuff. You know, like, "If I drive my car at the speed of light, what happens to the beam from the headlights?'

At the other end of the table, there was another guy looking pretty sad, and he stated that he could not find anyone to talk with. His problem was that he had an I.Q. of 60. Another guy overheard this and almost shouted, "Hey, I've got an I.Q. of 57. Let's talk." He came over and sat down at once. "Okay," said the first, "Tell me, do you prefer to sell term or whole life?"

I've Learned From My Mistakes. I have found that I can make the same mistake with much greater ease the second time around.

Our Newsletters ~Lyle Manery

There are two newsletters; "Chimo Says" and "Lyalta News". This one, of course, is "Chimo Says". We had two separate lists with our previous service provider. When we transferred our lists some names did not make the trip. Others may have been transferred to the wrong list. If you did not want to be on this list, simply unsubscribe.

If you want to receive the Lyalta newsletter, but you did not get the May issue please go to the Lyalta Web site and use our opt-in sign up box.

About The Newsletters:

Chimo Says, will have information about financial matters. We will try to make it interesting and valuable to everyone, not just for those who are active in the financial services business.

Lyalta News, will provide information for authors, writers, speakers, and self-publishers. In the broadest sense that includes everyone who writes an article or a report, and anyone who plans or needs to give a talk.

We would like to hear what you think of our newsletters. You can review our previous newsletters on the respective Web sites.

Also, if you would visit both of our sites and send us an e-mail with your impressions, thoughts, or insights, we will include your name in a draw for a book of your choice, from the Lyalta bookstore.

Here is another bribe: If you forward this newsletter to five of your friends or acquaintances, we will give you a copy of "Laughing at Life". All you need to do is advise us that you have done it. View all our books at the Lyalta Bookstore.
